The Ruthless- well this title sure is fitting, because J Bree is SAVAGELY Ruthless in this second outing in the Queen Crow. I am gutted, and J Bree just keeps twisting the knife. The Ruthless picks right up where All Hail left off- and J Bree moves us at a breakneck pace. The Game is afoot, which means the manipulation, power seeking, violent and gritty machinations of the Twelve are more complex and dangerous than ever. But enemies loom even beyond Mount’s Bay, and with the Wolf galivanting with her harem, Avery is still trying to hold down the fort and keep everyone in check, taking down threats to her family, even if one of those threats might be heartbreakingly close to home. Twists, turns, savage violence and heartbreak abound- I could not put it down.LIPS? LIPS WHO. Avery is the real queen. I said what I said. Of course, I love The Wolf, but Avery now holds the title as my favorite heroine. I mentioned this in my review of book one, but it is worth mentioning again- it is brilliant that J Bree sent Lips and crew away on tour. Because it allows Avery to really step out of the shadows of being the fierce and loved sidekick and emerge as a queen in her own right. In book one we saw her really try to get her footing in this new role- to function without the crutch that is her family. To lead on her own. And in The Ruthless we see her metamorphosis continue. She was always fierce, but now she’s a FORCE. A key player, a clever leader, and the master of the board.Atticus and Aodhan own me- COMPLETELY. Aodhan just continues to charm. In a world full of merciless and hardened killers, he is the bright shining light. Oh, he’s lethal and feral in his own right, but he’s also so darn SWOONY. His big open, selfless, and unconditionally loving heart are EVERYTHING. And like Avery, my heart is broken over and over again by Atticus. Two steps forward, one step back, but my goodness is he a beautiful soul. This is a man so besotted, so devoted that his entire identity has centered on a girl he’s only recently allowed himself to fully love. He’s controlling, protective, strategic in the way he protects Avery- you can’t help but fall madly in love, even if his love hurts. But the question really is- can these two co-exist in Avery's life?J Bree so beautifully foils these men- both have been part of Avery’s past pain, and both redeem their part of it in totally divergent ways. Aodhan is open while Atticus is shuttered, Aodhan is a light vitality to Atticus’s steely restraint. Aodhan’s cards are on the table, while Atticus is still moving pieces on the board. One transparent, one frustratingly opaque. Atticus protects by his distance, while Aodhan protects by his emotional proximity. But they both love Avery, and they both continue to make profound sacrifices to protect and empower her. Sacrifices we’ve yet to fully understand, both big and small, but that are clearly transformative. Earth shattering. And each hold such a fundamental part of her heart and soul- each love her in a way that only they individually can. Aodhan is safety, comfort- the simplicity and stability Avery has always craved. And Atticus is unpredictable, complicated, but he's also her tether, a part of her soul.Dare I say this may be my favorite J Bree series yet, but this book wrecked me. I had a few good laughs (often courtesy of my favorite Butcher), I gasped, I swooned and sighed- but I was also left bereft, misty with tears more than once. J Bree writes with such an unparalleled energy- the Mounts Bay world is immersive and consuming. But these characters- these dark, twisted, RUTHLESS characters are what make her stories so unique. Characters who she somehow endears to us because of their broken moral compass- because their darkness comes from a place of light- love for family, and the hope for happiness and safety within their corrupted little world. Avery might not have found hers yet- but the Queen Crow has at last emerged. But only time will tell, at what cost?Needless to say- prepare for a shattering cliffhanger and for months of desperate longing until our queen graces our pages again. ***Warning this review may contain spoilers***First off J Bree THANK YOU SO MUCH for another amazing, soul sucking story!! Mounts Bay books are like readers crack they will suck you and have you begging for more! The Ruthless answered so many questions from All Hail but then leaves you with that many more!!Book sets off with Avery and her discovery of the wall. She is terrified and she decides it is time to get the heck out of dodge. She feels like Atticus is shattering her with that revelation and she just can't deal with it or deal with seeing him. Atticus is finally able to corner her and explain the mysterious wall to her. Explain that he has been receiving those photos from someone else....and that someone is a dangerous player in the game because he believes they are behind the threats and the stalking. But they can't even begin to get over one issue before a new one is popping up. Like COME ON! She already has some psycho stalker that has been terrorizing her. Then you add being heavily involved and standing in for the Wolf and poor Avery just can't catch a break. There are two seats open on The Twelve and it will be time for another game. Problem is they have 3 people they can't stand to lose and only two seats. And The Bear will just keep pushing and trying them until he is finally dealt with. The odds are not in their favor and the second game brings more heart ache than Avery or Adohan can handle. They are both breaking and both still trying to hold on.Then Avery is deceived and goes to meet who she thinks is the Crow only to be KIDNAPPED! Her psycho kidnapper turns out to be the stalker who was being helped by the person the Crow suspected all along. This kidnapper wants to own Avery and keep her on display in his collection in a glass box. But Avery refuses to break. She refuses to stop fighting. She just knows if she hangs on just a little longer someone will come for her.The kidnapper should have known that The Crow would never let Avery go. He storms in guns blazing to rescue you Avery and they are almost home free when the unspeakable happens and the Crow is wounded very badly. Now while they are in a very delicate state of mind Avery and Adohan have to go back to the Crow's mansion and stand in for a meeting with the Twelve. Will the Crow survive? What will happen to Avery if he doesn't? Can they just make it until Lips gets home? Why is Ash acting so cold to Avery at the very end?
